Tangent and Circle Working Together

On 5 July 2008 Southend Round Table organised a Moonlight Colourthon. 1,200 people dressed in bright clothing participated in a 13 mile walk commencing at 7pm along the foreshore and cliffs between Leigh, Chalkwell, Westcliff and Southend. The walkers were supporting around 202 different and very varied charities. At the end of the event £145,000 was pledged for local charities which certainly made the events slogan of “Brightening Peoples Lives” particularly poignant.
Pat Paulson, Tangent National President, was able to make a detour in her busy schedule to join me in supporting Southend 106 Round Table at the event. Together with Area 30 Ladies Circle Chairman, Faye Borthwick, we handed out leaflets about Ladies Circle to the participants when they arrived to register. We were greatly encouraged by the fact that we did not find any on the floor! It was sometimes difficult to judge age correctly, and once or twice we had meaningful conversations about open membership in Tangent, which was certainly food for thought. The photograph shows myself, Pat and Faye with our supply of leaflets.
Obviously such a large event is difficult for an individual Table to organise without the support of the 4 Clubs and indeed other local clubs and individuals. We were told the little cliché of “without you this event really would not be possible” was very true. So with swollen chests off we went to our designated posts along the route to give directions, encouragement and motivation to the entrants.
It certainly was a fun evening and well worth the effort to support Round Table. Well done, guys!
